MOTHERS’ UNION (Christian care for families world wide)
The aim of the MU is to strengthen and preserve marriage and family life through Christianity and to help those whose family life has met with adversity. Prayer is at the heart of all we do.
Gosfield MU currently has 16 members and two Diocesan members. Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of the month, between 2 - 4 pm - sometimes in the Maurice Rowson Hall and very often a member will host a meeting.
We have a varied programme throughout the year, usually with a speaker but sometimes an informal ‘at home’ meeting when we are able to discuss together all that is going on in the MU, locally and worldwide. Our Wave of Prayer’ is a daily act of reflection, thanksgiving and intercession undertaken by members around the world and we have special links with Doko & Owo : Nigeria - Rejaf : South Sudan - Military Episcopate : Kenya - Jamaica & the Cayman Islands : West Indies - Chelmsford : Canterbury.
We have a Nativity Stable which visits the homes of families in Gosfield, during Advent. All the figures in the Crib have been knitted by members over the years, and each family is able to keep a knitted sheep or an angel for example, as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. A knitted teddy is given to each child baptized in Church and birthday cards are sent until they reach 5 years of age.
There is always support for church activities - Workshop for Mothering Sunday, Harvest Festival Basket, running the raffle at the Church Coffee Morning, and the flower arrangements in church for the Carol Service. Members help with Children’s Church, the Brass and Church Cleaning and the Flower Rota. Members support The Children’s Society, and provide items for the Toy Cupboard in Church.
Wedding Cards are given to each couple married in our Church, and also on their first Anniversary, so they know the Church will continue to care for them in the days and years ahead.
The Mothers’ Union has two magazines ‘Families First’ and ‘Families Worldwide’. These are two excellent publications covering a wide variety of topics about Family Life both here and across the world.
There are copies in Church, please take a look and see for yourself!
As members of the MU, we generally think of ourselves as part of a branch first and foremost, and then as members of a huge society that is able to do so much throughout the world for the good of humanity as a whole and women in particular.
